One’s “Golden Years” should not be a time of uncertainty. Yet for talented artist, and disabled senior citizen, Cheryl, the times were most definitely uncertain. Through no fault of her own, she found herself only days away from being evicted from her home. The landlord of the property where she rented a room for herself and her caregiver had lost the house to foreclosure and the bank told her she had to get out. . . NOW.
For Cheryl, the next stage in her life was going to be homelessness. Her only source of income was a small Social Security check. Given all her other expenses, there was no way she could afford market rates on a different apartment. And low-income senior housing had a waiting list that was 6 years long!
Fortunately, help was available. Cheryl first sought assistance from local agency Poverty Matters, which then notified Bet Tzedek of the emergency. Our expert Housing attorneys immediately determined that Cheryl was protected from eviction by the Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance. We filed an emergency motion that resulted in the eviction being stayed. We were also able to negotiate relocation benefits.
Cheryl was ultimately able to find affordable housing in a senior complex that catered to artists like herself. She and her caregiver are now comfortably at home in beautiful and secure new surroundings.
Working with other community agencies to help those in need is part of what Bet Tzedek does, day in, day out. Together we make a difference. Together we fight injustice.
